St John's Church

This is another old and interesting religious buildings of Caceres. It's home to the St John the Baptist parish, located outside the city walls, westward in the square with its name.

St John's Church

The whole building was made in excellent ashlar stones, it has two Gothic portals, both framed by alfiz, possibly built in 14th century. The apse is polygonal, typically Gothic, with buttress on the corners, but shows a corbel table with late Romanesque taste, which forces to date the aforementioned apse maybe from late 13th century. Also two rose windows with beautiful Gothic tracery stand out on the apse. Standing above the building there's the two stage tower, in ashlar masonry too, squeezed between Espadero's Chapel and its vestry. By the way, that chapel is a notable construction added in 18th century, having two magnificent carved coats of arms on both corners of the chapel vestry. Both have helmet and mantling meaning nobility. One of them, whose field is party per cross (divided into four quarters) shows arms of Pizarro, Sande, Sanabria and Saavedra. The other one, whose field is party per pale (halved vertically) has the arms of Espadero and Pizarro.
