Bujaco Tower. Walled Town of Caceres

Bujaco Tower is a magnificent watchtower of the almohad wall of Cáceres, built in rammed earth by the Arabs in the 12th century over several rows of Romans ashlars. It was reinforced in masonry in later times.

Legend says that the Almohad warlord Abu Ya'qub (who the name of Bujaco derives from) besieged for six months this tower, defended by the last Fratres of Cáceres around the year 1173. After surrender he slew all those who defended it, including 40 knights of the order. Fratres, half monks, half soldiers, were the germ of the Orden de Santiago (Order of St James), subsequently founded.

It has a height of 25 meters and its plant is almost square (10.83 x 10.25 meters). It's defended by three machicolations with battlements and embrasures. In addition it's crowned with battlements with pyramidal crest on Muslim style. On the front, there's a Renaissance balcony that was added in the 16th century, known as the Balcón de los Fueros (Balcony of the local laws).

Nowadays the Tower has a must-see interpretation centre for tourists. A nice skyline of the old town can be seen from the top of it.
