October 16th to 18th 2014

Educating Entrepreneurs in Traditional Crafts and Arts

Third International Meeting. Lecce. Italy

Last year I took part in a workshop to make handmade soaps. I used to go to the Centre for adults in Aldea Moret every Monday in the afternoon to do this workshop.

To my surprise, I was chosen among the pupils of the workshop to go to Lecce in Italy with some of the teachers of the Grundtvig project and another pupil who had participated in the workshop of painting on fans.

At last, the day of the journey arrived: we left Cáceres, on Wednesday, 15th October at 06.30 in the early morning. We were five teachers and two students. We got to the airport on time, as it had been previously arranged.

Madrid, Rome, Brindisi, Lecce. There was an only problem: when we arrived at the airport in Brindisi, we had to make a complaint because I got my suitcase lost. After that we got on a bus to go to our hotel in Lecce. The Turkish members of the project took the same bus and we introduced ourselves. We got to our B&B, in the city centre, we washed our hands and faces and we went out for dinner and to do a little bit of sightseeing.

On Thursday morning, we left the hotel early to have breakfast, since we had to meet the rest of the members of the project in San Orozco Square at 09:30. There we met the Italians, the Cypriots, the Maltese, the Lithuanians and the Turks. The Italians, who were the host members, did their best for us to feel at home. The workshop we were going to join was about papier maché, cartapesta.

We used to spend all the time in a gallery, where they taught us some of the techniques of this art and then we had to practise. We ourselves made a small basket with three little flowers and a big rose. The result was pretty good. On Friday evening, to finish the course, the Spanish people had to do the presentation of the work developed in the Grundtvig project; our teachers had everything very well prepared and organised. The virtual presentation was shown in English, accompanied with interesting pictures.

I would like to say that I came back delighted for several reasons: our teachers gave us a superb lesson. They knew how to behave wisely in every single situation. Juan and myself, both students, were two more members of the team. We never felt different from the teachers in any situation. What is more, in some moments of relax, we also enjoyed some language lessons, like it happened in Miggiano, the village that we visited on Friday morning. On other occasions, at meal times we had discussions on history, science or language topics. Of course, we used to speak English and even Italian to the rest of the members of the project.

I feel very lucky and proud of the fact that I was fortunate enough to be a member of this project. I would also like to state that if any pupil got to read what I am writing now, I would encourage them to get involved in this kind of experience. This is a different world, you will always learn from it and what is more important, I think that you appreciate more what surrounds you and yourself. Although you may think there are different people living in different countries, they will probably have the same difficulties as we may have. Education, teaching and learning may improve and even change your own lives. I feel really proud of my vocational teachers in this school, always devoted to this hard but rewarding task: go on always this way

Thank you to the Grundtvig project for presented me with this unforgettable experience.
